Baptism does save us, but not physical baptism. 1 Pet. 3:21.
Spiritual Baptism which saves involves the giving of a good conscience. 1 Pet. 3:21.
What is conscience? It is the reasoning of man being convicted by the Holy Spirit. (Jn. 16:7,8; Jn. 8:3-9; Isa. 1:18).
A good conscience means that the person is renewed, thus his reasoning is convicted regularly of holiness and of how to live by the Spirit. 2 Cor. 1:12; Rom. 9:1.
A good conscience must be attended by Faith and Love. 1 Tim. 1:5,19; 1 Tim. 3:9.
A good conscience is also purged from dead works which means it is blocked from accepting sinful works. Heb. 9: 14.
There is no more evil in a good conscience because the heart is sprinkled purging it. Heb. 10:22.
A good conscience has no more weakness that allows sin to go uncheck. Heb. 10:2
It is only after this, that the body can be washed in clean water which is physical baptism. Heb. 10:22.
A summary of what we have just covered is:
a. Spiritual baptism gives us a good conscience.
b. This conscience has the Holy Spirit directing it.
c. It also has Faith and love with it.
c. It also has Faith and love with it.
d. It is freed from evil works.
e. Thus physical baptism can occur.
Spiritual baptism which comes before physical baptism is achieved by the sprinkling of the blood of Christ. (Heb. 10:22; Heb. 9:14); Gal. 2:20.
This is being justified by the blood of Christ. Rom. 5:9.
To be justified is to have good slay or nullify the old man, and to received the new man or a change of heart. (Rom. 4:6-8; Ps. 32:1,2,5,11).
This is explained as the death of the old man and the resurrection to a new life (or gift of a new man). Rom. 6:3-7.
Thus physical baptism is a symbol of the spiritual baptism which is the destruction of the old man and the gift of a new man. Eph. 4:22-24.
