This is what I thought of when I read David's statement in Psalm 51:10: that he believed in a forgiveness (Ps.51:1 blotting out of transgressions there = forgiveness) by God that transforms the heart into sinfreeness within. This is to say he believed in a transformative justification or subjective justification. Proof of forgiveness being the same as justification is seen in Romans 4:6-7 where Paul explains that David spoke of the imputation of righteousness without works (which is justification by the faith of Jesus as the faith of Jesus - or the revealed word in the person is counted for Righteousness Rom.4:5) when David said "Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven - Ps.32:2". So Create in me a clean heart = blotting out of transgression which is equal to forgiveness which is equal to justification. Thus David understood justification or forgiveness to be transformation into sinfreeness.

We are told: “The inquiry of everyone should be ‘whose am I? To whom do I owe allegiance? Is my heart renewed? Is my soul reformed? Are my sins forgiven? Will they be blotted out when the time of refreshing shall come?” Ibid, pg. 419. We must needs examine ourselves to see if we...
